Gearing Up for Spartacon

As you may have noticed, I have a tendency to get distracted by other things, and my "gaming" hobby tends to fall more in the realm of collecting and painting than actual gaming. One exception, though, is this weekend.

It's Spartacon Saturday. Time was, this was an annual event. Then I had one bad time there, coupled with some life issues (and inclement weather), and I missed a few. But for about the last five years or so (I may have missed one due to snow), it's been a fixture on the calender. I suppose one bad experience in about 15 years is pretty good odds. And the weather looks good for this year!

(Why the concern about weather? This is a con in Lansing, Michigan. In January. I live about an hour and 45 minutes away, on clear roads, north by northeast.)

Actually, the fact it takes place in January is to my benefit. This is one of those rare times of year where I can pretty much predict my weekends will be free. Holiday obligations are over, spring has not yet sprung with all of its inherent yard work, etc. And summer. Whew. Sorry, but summer's are too short, and summer Saturday's too precious to spend indoors with gamers. No offense. Especially in Michigan, where nice-weather Saturdays are a rarity indeed. Then fall hits, and it seems there is always something, from school activities, to football games, to family birthdays, to raking leaves (I have lots of trees). January is good. Even if I do have to get up at o-dark-thirty to make it.

All of that also helps explain the dearth of gaming opportunities the rest of the year. I did pretty well in 2011, getting in two additional gaming days on top of Spartacon. A horribly low number for lots of you, I'm sure, but above average for me. This will be the second gaming day of 2012, so the average is already way up!

Now, just to decide what games to participate in... So many good choices! Especially in that second session.

Also, if you will recall, this relates to one of my 2012 resolutions, to actually put on a game at the 2013 event. Right now, I am leaning toward an AWI game.

See you there?
